He looked into her eyes, and felt the heat between her legs. He grabbed her by the hair and pulled tight until she moaned for compassion. He released slowly and kissed her on the cheek, and then moved his lips to meet hers. He always left a trademark bite after every kiss, and she exhaled in pleasure. It felt as if the earth was on fire, and if not the earth, then at least the master bed. It was cold night in late February, but sweat dripped from their bodies. They couldn’t stand the sheets nor the clothes, so both materials were thrown to cover the tile beneath the bed; the bed where love was ignited.
He wanted the moment to last forever, but it could not. He wanted to be with her for the rest of his life, but he barely considered that choice. This was his destiny, it was all mapped out, and he couldn’t say a word to her. His reward was his motivation, his drive, and like a bull charging, his instincts told him to pursue. It angered him, and he took it out on her. She felt her body go numb and time seemed to stop. She caught her breath in that moment and looked around the room, then back into his eyes. She felt his anger, and fed off it. Suddenly time rushed back and she reached for him and tried to fight back, but he came at her harder and she fell back to the bed in ecstasy. He wanted nothing else but to keep her in bed and hold her close. His love, Devin, wanted the same. Unfortunately, the world needed him more.
The end was near.
His blood rushed and every muscle began to contract. He pushed her down and didn’t let go, didn’t slow down, not until he got what he came for. He cried out in both agony and accomplishment, and slowly came to a halt. He rested on her chest, still upset, enraged that the time was nigh. He bit her on the chest, and she felt her body’s feeling return, as if he had shocked her back from the hospital bed. He looked up at her, concerned about something, but Devin wasn’t sure what he was thinking. She began to stroke his hair slowly.
“It’ll be okay, Nathan, I promise,” she whispered.
“No, it won’t be, you have no idea,” he replied, trailing off in thought as he walked from her bed to the middle of the room. She looked at his body. Perfect, in every way, in that moment, as the light bounced off his back and showed how well God sculpted him. She giggled a bit, not just from excitement, but also because she knew God had nothing to do with his accomplishments. That’s what made this choice so hard for Nathan- he was a self-made man, on more levels than she could imagine.
Nathan picked up his shirt and began to dress himself. He walked out her bedroom, leaving Devin in a state of confusion. She put on her nightgown and chased after him to ask him where he was going, but she received no response. At her door, he turned to look at her, and before Nathan could take another step, Devin grabbed his arm. In that moment, he was already on the outside, looking in, straight into her eyes, knowing he was about to turn his world upside down to stop the real world from burning to the ground. Nathan pulled Devin towards him, kissed her one last time, and then left without saying a word. She watched him pull away in his car and stood at the door for a few moments, unsure of what had just happened. She was still confused, a feeling she had been left with the past few weeks with him. She wondered what was going on as she paced back to the bedroom. Tonight her blood ran warmer than usual, uncertain, nervous, worried, especially since he left his jacket, his favorite, on her floor. Considering how cold it was outside, she didn’t understand why the only thing left on the floor was this maroon memory. She bent to pick it up, and suddenly felt a sharp pain from the back of her head. She then saw a flash, and finally nothing but black. Silence surrounded the room that was now in the ashes of their love. Her body lay limp on the cold floor, and a man, dressed stealth, picked her pick, tied her up, and motioned for the others to come in and clear the scene. A familiar figure walked over and stood over the bed. He had a morose look on his face. He bent down and finished Devin’s mission. Her only mission, to pick up his jacket, was now complete.
In the back of an unmarked black van, the plan for the future set in motion. Devin was unconscious, but knew that this would not end well for her. She was stripped of identification, clothing, markings, and anything that could have led someone to find her. These people had the tools and the technology to make her disappear, but couldn’t do it the easy way. This was Nathan’s first lesson, but in the back of that van, he quietly questioned whether the end justified the means.
The van stopped, everyone jumped out, and Devin was slapped back to reality. She opened her eyes, and was shocked to see Nathan standing before her. She tried to scream her last words to him, but the rag between her lips made her cries incoherent. The cinder blocks were tied tightly to her feet. The rope was cut to slit her wrists and she bit her tongue, swallowing blood, choking before she hit the cold and murky water. She looked up and saw Nathan above her, looking down, wearing his maroon jacket. Devin knew she was going to die, and accepted it at the hands of the man she loved.
As her body drifted down to the darkness, in that cold water, Nathan could still see the fire in her eyes. It burned with passion, until out of sight, and then he blushed. The blood rushed to his face as he walked away. Nathan was angry, because he knew that it wasn’t only a girl dying in that river below.
It was his hopes and dreams.
